Delicious cheap eats in Niseko

There is talk on the street that Japan is expensive, but there are always ways to eat well at affordable prices. With many amazing places to eat in the village where you can get a great meal for under ¥2000 and save some money for a backcountry adventure or snowmobiling through the birch trees!

This list is just the starting point for your food adventures, and it's important to note that what is considered Japanese food goes far beyond the international favourites such as sushi and teppanyaki.

So lets get started...

1. Ramen

This is probably no surprise considering ramen is often a student favourite, but there are many places that do it well in Niseko that you can try. In Hirafu 'Niseko Ramen' is a stand out because of their famous ramen by the same name that contains a potato puree on top of the main broth and noodles. The region we are in is famous for it's potato farming in summer and you'll find the produce is proudly used in menus all over town.

2. Soup Curry

If you haven't heard about soup curry then you have something to look forward to! This is a Hokkaido speciality and there is one in Hirafu Izumikyo area that is a short walk away from the Niseko Ski Lodge Hirafu. The name says it all it's a soup based curry that you can choose your spice level from 1-15 and they serve each curry with rice on the side. The soup flavour can be customised to a coconut soup (but their original is a great place to start). They offer vegetarian options and each dish is full of local seasonal vegetables too!

Restaurant: Tsubara Tsubara

At the Hirafu midtown intersection you'll find this restaurant with some amazing home made udon dishes on offer. It's possible to walk or take the village shuttle down here if you do not have a car, and enjoy some Japanese noodles. One of our favourite things is the well cooked vegetables which are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. There are plenty of options for all tastes and some very filling dishes as well.
